Privlaka

Privlaka is a municipality located in the northern part of Dalmatia, Croatia, on a peninsula between the Bay of Nin and the Zadar Channel, and it is approximately 20 kilometers away from the city of Zadar. Privlaka is known for its beautiful beaches, clear sea, and stunning sunsets. Some of the popular beaches in Privlaka include Sabunike Beach, Bilotinjak Beach, and Škrapavac Beach. It is also a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing due to its steady winds.

Privlaka is known for its Sabunjari, a group of men who used to extract sea sand from the region and transport it on their shoulders to traditional wooden ships, such as leuts, trabakuls, and braceras. The Sabunjari played a crucial role in the reconstruction of Zadar after World War II, as the extracted sand was used for construction purposes. They are remembered for their resilience, determination, and pride in their work, despite the physically demanding nature of their job.

The town’s strategic location on a peninsula surrounded by the sea has made fishing a vital activity for its inhabitants, providing them with a source of food and income. The local fishing culture in Privlaka is deeply rooted in tradition and history, with many families passing down their knowledge and skills from generation to generation. Fishermen in Privlaka use traditional fishing methods, such as using nets and traps, and they often use small wooden boats to navigate the shallow waters near the shore.
